E4S Alliance | Secondary Substation Platform – SSP

E4S Alliance

In the current energy transition, it is vital to increase visibility at the edge, making the grid data driven and mitigating the challenges created by the increasing penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER).

Mission

The goal of the E4S Alliance is to accelerate the creation of a standards-based, open, interoperable, and secure architecture that addresses both the technical and business challenges faced by utilities around the globe.

The consortium is embracing the need for better efficiency by developing a Secondary Substation Platform (SSP) reference architecture designed to enable lower CAPEX and OPEX as well as faster TTM (Time to Market) by digitalizing the secondary substations. The flexibility provided by virtualization on a common platform makes it easier to implement new use cases at the edge as the need emerges.

The SSP aims to provide utilities with a secure and highly scalable platform to monitor and control the network, especially in the low voltage, by means of:

  • Integrating existing and new functionalities in a single and standard hardware device.
  • Allowing the implementation of distributed intelligence capabilities integrated in the same hardware.

The platform will be validated in a pilot testing hardware and end-to-end solution.

Consortium partners

The consortium partners have joined forces to create a new intelligent, open standard for secondary substations that promises to be a game-changer for the rapidly evolving global energy sector. They are bringing in a vast technology expertise and domain knowledge and experience in ‘Grid Operations’ management to ensure that the SSP provides the right level of distributed intelligence.
